Liberty leading the people.
Description
- there is only once female
- the only female is holding up a French flag
- dead people
- there is another French flag in the background
- the females dress is lower then her chest
- one dead person has no pants.
- bear chested woman is the main focus.
- guns
- French Revolution
- everyone's fighting
- city in the background
- dark colour

Analysis
- the woman is the focus point because;
- brighter colours around her then darkness, mam on the ground looking up at her, she's in the centre of it all.

Romanticism
- to make something better than it actually is.

3rd of March.
- guy with white shirt in the middle
- dead people on the floor
- terrified people.
- the executioners are in uniform
- White shirt - innocent, purity.

- guards- we don't see there faces, they are in uniform, don't see there emotions.
- French soldiers

Realism
- it's raw, it shows what really happens.

Romanticism vs. Realism

Liberty leading the people
A woman is in the centre holding a French flag leading men with guns over dead bodies. War. The top half of her dress is torn. There's a city in the distance. A men is pulling on the woman's leg pleading maybe. The woman is holding a gun.
French Revolution.
She is the focal point because it's bright and centre, and there's a man looking up at her from her feet. Then you are drawn to the city because of the light and the man pointing diagonally. Then are eyes are drawn back to the woman then to the man in the hat, then you're eyes are drawn across the bottom of the page, to the dead bodies.
The French flag, the clothing and the dead bodies gives hints that the artwork is about the French Revolution.
The woman is a symbol of Liberty, freedom. Like the Statue of Liberty, who was given to the Americans from the French.
Wasn't an actual event, it was painted after the revolution. An interpretation of the event.
The people who are dead are in uniforms, and the people who are alive are every day people. Inspire the common people.

Romanticism:
To make something better than it actually is.
That victory is glorious, and freedom. Mental health and dead people are overlooked.
Art should be something to inspire people.

The 2nd of May and the 3rd of May.
The 3rd of May:
There's a guy with a white shirt who looks like he's about to be executed. There's dead bodies, night time, people in uniforms, there's a hill and building. There's light around him, crucifixion pose. The soldiers: guns, no faces, no empathy, uniform.
French soldiers executing people. There's a monk.

This artwork isn't romantic, it's realism.

Realism:
Showing reality of a situation.
Opposite of romanticism.

The artworks are opposite.

Woman leading. Dress half off. Focal point
Man in top hat and beard. Abraham Lincoln?
Young boy with guns
Woman and "abe" with larger guns

One man on floor looks of high importance. Shoulder brushes. Another next to him
Person looking up to the woman
In London?
Dark sky
Woman has no shoes
People of high and low importance fighting together
Bayonette

Romanticism: to make it something to aspire to. This type of art was made to inspire people

Liberty Leading the People - 1830
Eugene Delacroix

Centre character is a woman holding a French flag above her head
People all have guns
Every other figure is male
Many dead bodies laying on the ground
Smoking buildings in the background
Lady is carrying a bayonet
Dress is torn and doesn't cover her breasts
Notre Dame is in the background
Fighting going along with weapons
From the French Revolution
Dead man has no pants
Possibly a celebration
Men shooting guns into the air and she is holding the flag in a triumphant gesture
Lots of dark colours
Second French flag in the background
Behind her is bright
She is in the centre of the artwork
Men looking up at her
Flag of the French Republic

The lady is a symbol of liberty and freedom
The Statue of Liberty was given to America by the French because the French believed that the Americans upheld the same values
The artist didn't actually see this as there probably wasn't a woman running around half naked with a gun and if he had set up his easel to paint this he would have been dead
Soldiers symbolic of the everyday authority
Shows the people that they can do anything they set their minds to
Created to inspire the common people to continue to fight for a republic and not to give in to the aristocracy

Romanticism- to make something out as better than it actually is
Promising victory to be glorious, wonderful and exactly what they want
Art should be something that inspires people, takes them out of their everyday lives and gives them something to hope and dream for. Art should be beautiful

The 3rd of May

Man in white in the middle
Terrified people
Man in centre being executed
The oppressed and the oppressors
Apparently during the night, very dark
People kneeling around the guy in the white shirt
Hill behind them
Big light in the middle
City in the background
Man making crucifix pose
White shirt symbolic of purity and innocence
Can't see soldiers faces
Have guns
Intentionally don't see faces and see them as a machine
Contrast to people being shot

Napoleon conquered Spain and tried to conquer all of Europe
Uprising of Spanish people in Madrid against the French army
After the uprising on the 2nd the French army was stronger and in the early morning of the 3rd of My in the early morning many people who appeared to cause trouble and may cause trouble were executed in the hundreds.

Realism- showing the reality of a situation
Artist wouldn't have been there
Definitely wouldn't have seen from that angle

Realism is the opposite of Romanticism

The bare chested woman is the focal point of the artwork
She holds the French flag
Smoke covers the background
Violent scene
Everyone is holding guns
City in the back burning
Guy on the left is pant less
Person in blue is kneeling down before her
French Revolution
Symbol of freedom
Resembles the Statue of Liberty
Statue of Liberty was actually a gift from the French to the USA
People still standing look poor, like regular citizens
The fallen people wear uniform
The man on the left has been stripped off that uniform to send the message that the rich people were no longer in charge

Francisco Goya
3rd of May
Guy with a white shirt in the middle
Looks like he's about to be executed
Dead people cover the floor
Terrified facial expressions
People who are about to execute them are in uniform
Two distinct groups - oppressors and oppressed
People kneel around the main guy
White shirt symbolises purity, innocence
Can't see their faces or expressions ('bad guys')
The bad guys are like machines

Romanticism vs Realism

Liberty Leading The People
Eugene Delacroix
1830
Oil on canvas
The painting displays a visual of a bare chested woman who seems to be raising a French flag within the air, as she ascend upon people who are assumed dead. The women seems to be leading a group of men who are holding guns and swords. The image suggests the representation of the the of the French Revolution era.
The contradicting idea of the woman being a the focal point of the image - suggested by the the brighter colours painted behind her, in the centre of the image - allows the audience to question, were women even recognised during that era?
The French Revolution was taken place during the late 1700s to the early 1800s
The flag is a symbol of an idea of how The French should be
The woman displays the concept of freedom and liberty
Contrasts with artwork of the Statute of Liberty
The image is painted after the French Revolution
Created to inspire the people to keep fighting
The dead symbolises the authorities or the upper class of society who have been taken over by the community of everyday people
Romanticism to display something better then the what it actually is - contradicting the idea of war

The 3rd of May 1808
Francisco Goya
1814
Oil on canvas
The painting is of a man who is suggested to be executed. There are already people who are dead on the lower part of the painting. The man about to be killed, has his arms raised in a similar idea of Jesus's crucifixion. The symbolised white clothing, representing innocence. The soldiers are depicted as emotionless which contrasts with the people who seem to display emotions of fear and grief. The juxtaposed image of the oppressed and the oppressing.
The artwork displays realism as it depicts the The reality of what really had happened within these events. It recognises the emotions and occurring practices of what had happened, however realise that the artist was not at the occurring event. The displays the effects of these events which validates the raw and realities of this era/time frame
