i found this series of short films by hillman curtis about different designers and artists - they're great little bites as an introduction to the different people, and are very nice works in themselves. this one is about david carson, but i would recommend following the link at the bottom and checking them all out.

my other favourite blog (aside from the ones i contribute to, of course ;) ) is lost at e minor (see link on the right hand panel. it's updated many times each day and will keep you on the cutting edge of just about everything (cough). anyway - two awesome little things currently up are:

when garfield is removed from garfield, the humour pretty much instantly becomes dark and scary, but hilarious. the author describes them as comments on schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder and the like.

i've been trying to think of different ways for people in this year 12 to present their works. many of you are excellent illustrators, but how do present that in a manner that might stand out and get noticed, particularly by markers? so i'll kepp looking and thinking, but one way i've recently come across is at mypapercuts.com.

they give plans for diy cards for insignificant events and are very amusing.

Connection To Beauty

Seems to me that there is a motif of beauty reoccuring. Not really. But seeing all this kind of connected with my difficult and painstaking search for a concept in art. After self-assessment, I came to see that being a perfectionist is a big part of how I think and work everday, so I decided to explore this concept that is built within me.

From what I could relate to, I myself defined perfection as :

"The attempt to gratify the individuals perception of work and beauty, bringing the individual to a self-sense of satisfaction and achieved excellence. An individual trait that impends bloackages upon an individuals decision making, and hence the outward expression in forms of life, work and art. The act of perfection, or perfecting, aims to create something excellent, something of great degree, but often (more so always) do we fall short of it."

Ironically, being the perfectionist I am, I still could not come to conclusions of how to apply this very concept of perfection to my art. I was not satisfied with whatever ideas I had.

So how does this relate to posts beforehand? More specifically Annelise's. Well.. what struck me was towards the end of her article..

"...desperately searching for what is beautiful, true, and awesome. We don't need to--we can't--ignore brokenness and pain to believe in hope: what we have is the overwhelming story of redemption, and I promise you that this relates to any art you could plan to make, and the ideas from which and into which it springs :-)"

"We dont have to." Though perfection impends upon some of us, we dont have to try that hard to search for something that is awesome or true. We dont need to search for some great idea that we think is capable of blowing people's minds away.

Redemption. In my eyes this very act was perfect. He himself was perfect. If we keep by this, perfection will shine through in our art. From what I observed about perfection, by self-assessment Beauty will very much be obtained.

two photographers for jessbaz. what they both have in common for my eyes is the ability to completely eliminate any background noise from their images so that you are just presented with what the artist wishes you to see, yet the photos never feel empty or overly staged (well maybe the second one sometimes, but that's a deliberate ploy in those instances).

how to make monuments out of garbage. these three artists - polaroid kidd, SWOON and chris stain, take all the currently trendy art/design techniques - grafitti, stencilling, paste-ups etc etc - and turn them into a memorial of shattered ideals. is anyone planning on creating an installation for their body of work...

well, seeing as the first fruits of any work done over the holidays that i've seen is some stencilling, i thought it might be a good idea to introduce everyone to the godfather of stencilling - banksy - just in case anyone hasn't heard of him.

much much more than just a vandal (though he readily calls himself that as well) he makes incredibly insightful art. and he's got a particular fondness for mocking the established art world.

after seeing the documentary about relational art, i've found myself aware of a rather large debate about its relative merits or faults. keith tyson is an artist who sounds like he wants to stick himself right in the middle of the idea of relational art, but it seems to undermine the full effect of his work to me. watch the video of his latest work here:

Pixel art

Pixel art is done pixel by pixel in programs such as MS paint and Photoshop CS. It can take an artist from 1 hour to numerous years to complete a piece of detail and accuracy. Some artists(such as the makers of Eboy) are commisioned by magazines to create peices as big as 2 metres by 2 metres. This dosn't seem to be a widley appreaciated art form or sometimes, an art form that is even known, but if somebody can consistently work on something such as pixel art, placing pixel by pixel, using tone, shaping, colour and blending, working progressivley for years, then i think, as an audience of artists, we should appreaciate and recongnise pixel art!

matthew collings

i started reading the book of 'this is modern art' by matthew collings again this week. although i watch the series every year with year 12 students i haven't read the book for a few years. the way he writes is a manner which i really love and it constantly makes me smile and think. anyway, i thought i would google him to see what came up and i found the website emma briggs and matthew collings. it has a bunch of photos of their artworks, like this one:

what initially surprised me was the aesthetic blandness of the works. this made me question whether or not it was the same matthew collings - there's no face shots on the site or anything. research showed me that, yes, it was. the surprise is because his writing is so animated and vibrant, and these images aren't particularly that. but the site also has a bunch of small articles about the philosophy of the two collaborators (who also happen to be husband and wife) and this is where the good stuff is. the works actually make sense when seen in the context of, say, anti-relational art musings or discussions on the greatness of the use of colour of various renaissance era modernists. the actual paintings make little sense to me in the context of the y.b.a.s of the 90s which collings is famous for championing, but then that would be disappointing - if he was just involved in pale pastiches of that era. so for that reason i'm giving their work the benefit of the doubt.

whether or not i think they are visually brilliant as something that i'm not sure i can answer in the affirmative. and so the old question rears its head - is art successful if it can't be appreciated for in its physicality alone? is art that requires the theory good art? and if it's not, doesn't that just confirm the relational artists ideas that art is not physical objects? hmmm.....

this is my favourite screen printer. he has a great way of making lots of layers of abstract mess look very beautiful. i aspire to do that myself, but never manage to quite succeed, i don't think. i also bought his cd from him - it's excellent in the same, abstract messy way - and the packaging is all hand screenprinted so is pretty great.

speaking of printmaking, i got the prints back from the first print exchange i entered today. it's a great collection of different things, i will bring them all in to show tomorrow, though those on exams will have to track me down if you want to see them.
